Why are Smart Air products so affordable?

For years, big air purifier companies have made clean air over-priced and over-complicated. The truth is that purifiers are simple: a fan and a filter is all you need to breathe clean air in your home, office, hotel or school. Because most people don’t know the science behind purifiers, companies use flashy marketing to trick us into spending thousands of dollars on fancy looking machines.

Smart Air is a social enterprise based in Beijing that creates simple, no-nonsense air purifiers and provides free education to combat the impacts of air pollution. The majority of the profits flow into open-access research and education programs.

Tips for the general use of air purifiers:

Many air purifiers come with an integrated air quality sensor and a so called ‘auto mode’. These air purifiers seem particularly practical, but they have significant weaknesses. First, integrated air quality monitors are widely inaccurate as they are made of mediocre quality. Accurate and precise air readers mostly work with laser-based light scattering to individually count particles. Reliable and well-working devices have their price and cost between 4,900 and 9,000 THB. Rest assured that an air purifier for just as 4,000 Baht doesn’t use high quality technology to measure the air quality.

Don’t trust integrated sensors and “auto mode”

However, inferior monitors inside an air purifier are only one side of the problem. The other issue relates to the position of integrated sensors. The sensor is located in the air purifier itself and the air, for sure, is always good there. No matter if the air purifier is running at the lowest or highest level – the air quality right at the air purifier itself is always cleaner than at the other end of the room. If you now use your air purifier on auto-mode, the machine will always follow the incorrect information of the sensor and lowers its performance or even deactivates itself once it “thinks” the air is healthy.

This not only leads to wrong assumption but also serious health consequences, especially on very polluted days. Although your air purifier is switched on, it won’t do its job properly and you will eventually breathe constantly unhealthy air. This is why we never recommend to use the auto mode and trust integrated sensors. Both gimmicks are deceptive as well as health-threatening.

Get an external air quality monitor to know what’s really in the air

If air quality is important to you and you want to make sure that you are getting rid of all indoor pollutants, then you won’t be able to go without an external air quality monitor like the Kaiterra Laser Egg. We recommend to place it a few meters away from your air purifier to check that the room is being properly cleaned. If necessary you can adjust the speed level of your air purifier and see how it affects the air quality.

  1. Integrated air monitors are made of mediocre quality.
  2. Integrated air monitors only measure the air quality next to the air purifier.
  3. Auto modes are dangerous as they always follow the incorrect information of the sensor.
  4. Never use your air purifier on auto mode but rather place an external monitor a few meters away to have full control about your air quality.
