First of all, air purifiers are simple machines. They mainly consist of a fan and a HEPA and Carbon filter. Both components are not expensive.

Big companies, however, don’t make profits with simplicity, that’s why many of them try to overwhelm consumers with misleading marketing and claims.

The fan sucks in dirty air and pushes it through the filter which traps pollutants.

Paying more doesn’t mean cleaner air. Buying expensive air purifiers often means paying for marketing and branding.

Tests have shown that homemade air purifiers can work better than branded ones costing thousands of dollars.

How to Choose an Air Purifier in Thailand?

Let’s now focus on some key metrics to consider when choosing good air purifiers.

First of all, the concept of the “best air purifier” is subjective. It all boils down to whether an air purifier meets your needs or not.

So, let’s talk about your needs.

Room Size and CADR  

You need an air cleaner that keeps up with your space. Otherwise, the air in your home will remain dirty.

Large rooms need stronger air purifiers than smaller rooms. Or at least more of them.  

To find the right air purifier for your needs, look out for the CADR (Clean Air Delivery Rate) on the spec sheet.

The CADR rating is given in cubic meters per hour (m³/hr) or square feet per minute (sqft/min). It gives you an idea of how effectively and fast an air cleaner can purify the air in a given space.

Below, we’ve compiled a list of recommended Clean Air Delivery Rates (CADR) for different room sizes. This should help you to get more clarity.

For example, if your room size ranges between 25-35 sqm, you should look for air purifiers with a CADR between 200-300 m³/hr

Noise

I recommend paying attention to noise levels.

Most brands love to brag about how their air purifiers are whisper-quiet.

However, they usually refer to the noise levels on the lowest fan speed.

When you crank them up to the highest setting – which you’ll likely do when smog hits – most air purifiers can get pretty loud.

So, be ready to deal with some noise.

If you’re someone who needs absolute quiet, there’s hope. The Blast and Blast Mini air purifiers are known for being the quietest on the market.

Price

Don’t get tricked by brands claiming that their expensive premium air purifiers are the only ones reliably working.

This is wrong and led to many lawsuits in the past.

As mentioned above, expensive air purifiers aren’t better air purifiers. In contrast, you’d be surprised to find some budget-friendly units outperforming those with a price tag of THB 30,000 and upwards.

In any case, check the cost of replacement filters before making a purchase.

Some brands significantly mark up their HEPA filters.

Xiaomi – Air Purifier 3H

No doubt, the Chinese tech giant Xiaomi’s air purifiers are a big hit in Thailand. The Xiaomi 3H air purifier builds on the success of the hugely popular 2S version, which flew off the shelves during previous pollution seasons. Now, with the new and improved 3H model, users have more to look forward to.

The 3H boasts a more robust fan, taking its Clean Air Delivery Rate (CADR) up from 310 to 380 cubic meters per hour. This is good enough for rooms up to 50 sqm. The Xiaomi 3H allows users to choose from six different speed modes, giving them the flexibility to tailor the purifier’s performance to current air quality levels. In a modern twist, the 3H has replaced the 2S’s physical buttons with a sleek touchscreen interface. Some people will like it.

Design and Usability

Xiaomi deserves credit for the design of its devices. Not only their air purifiers, but all their products have an appealing and uniform look. The plastic housing is sturdy, and you can change the filter with ease. The machine is easy to tip over. Be aware of this if you have toddlers at home.

You can control the machine manually or with an app. We tried to connect the air purifier to the app but kept getting error messages. Setting the air cleaner up was quite a hassle. The app itself needs improvement. The design seems clunky, and sometimes, Chinese characters pop up, showing that it’s not fully translated.

It’s noisy

The Xiaomi air purifier has a noise level of 64 dB on its highest setting, which is quite loud and comparable to some vacuum cleaners. This makes it one of the loudest air purifiers available on the market. If you are sensitive to noise, this might be an important consideration.

Additionally, the device makes beeping noises when changing modes. While some people might find this feature bothersome, the beeping can be turned off using the accompanying app.

Replacement Filters

Xiaomi’s HEPA filters are usually H13 filters. This means they can filter 99.95% of all particles as small as 0.3 micrometers from the air. This is entirely sufficient to rid the air of fine dust, viruses, bacteria, allergens, etc.

Xiaomi states that the HEPA filters must be replaced every 6 months. Be aware of buying them on Lazada and Shopee. There are many fake versions available that emit weird smells. The price for replacement filters ranges between THB 890 and THB 990.

Xiaomi – Air Purifier 4 Lite

Looking for the latest addition to the air purifier family? The Xiaomi 4 Lite model has arrived, bringing with it some interesting features. Let’s break it down.

The 4 Lite sports a more refined design than its older sibling, the 3H. With a CADR of 360 m³/hr, it’s slightly weaker but still packs a punch. The case structure is different, but other than that, the Xiaomi Air Purifier 4 Lite shares many similarities with the 3H model. What’s more, it’s more affordable, and, interestingly, it comes with ionizers.

A Little Something Extra: Ionizers

The 4 Lite model has an ionizer function that amplifies the air purifier’s filtration capacity. This explains how such a compact machine can boast such a high CADR. But hold on, as with all shiny things, ionizers come with a catch.

Ionizers can produce ozone, potentially affecting your health. The silver lining? Xiaomi enables you to switch this function off, but you’ll have to connect the unit to the app first.

Since ionizers pull pollutants to surfaces, things can get dirty. Take a look at the Blue Air air purifier below. Notice the grime? That’s the work of ionizers. So, if you’re considering an air purifier with ionizers, be prepared for a little extra cleaning.

Equally noisy as the 3H

The Xiaomi Air Purifier 4 Lite doesn’t shy away from making its presence heard. It’s just as loud as the Xiaomi Air Purifier 3H, measuring at least 60 (dB) on high. Equipped with H13 filters, the Xiaomi air purifiers ensure 99.95% filtration of particles as small as 0.3 micrometers.

One more thing to keep an eye on: Xiaomi advises replacing the HEPA filters every six months. But be cautious while shopping on Lazada and Shopee. Beware of counterfeit versions emitting odd odors. The genuine replacement filters will set you back between THB 890 and THB 990.

Philips – AC1215/20

This Philips model boasts a CADR of 270 m3/hr, which sadly doesn’t match up to the claim of being able to clean spaces as large as 63 sqm. But it’s actually fine for rooms around 30 sqm. The power consumption (50W) is higher than Sqair and Xiaomi.

Functionality-wise, this Philips air purifier doesn’t disappoint. Equipped with both a HEPA and Carbon filter, it’s ready to tackle pollutants and absorb TVOCs from the air. Five-speed settings give you control, although be warned: at 60 dB on the highest setting, it’s no quieter than the Xiaomi air purifier 4 Lite.

The AC1215 comes with a now-standard built-in air quality sensor. These are questionable as they only measure the air right around the device. Xiaomi air purifiers share this flaw. So yes, when it comes to the PM2.5 sensor and auto mode, caution is advised.

Questionable Business Practice

There’s a wrinkle, though. Philips seems to have taken a peculiar path with their replacement filter business. You see, once the filter display calls for a change, the device locks you out. It can’t be switched on. That’s quite frustrating. The cost of replacement filters is relatively high. And there are tons of fake filters lurking on Shopee and Lazada. Be careful.
